This is what the Superfans had in mind when they ordered “da beef”: peppery, aromatic, thinly sliced roast beef piled thick on a steamed hoagie roll, topped with soft green bell peppers and doused with roasting juices until the bread is soggy with flavor. Stud the meat with a little hot pickled giardinera and you have yourself a sandwich.
At Italian Beefstro, authentic Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches ($4.95) are the draw for the larger-than-life characters who populate the joint. Classic Vienna Beef Chicago hot dogs ($3.89) laced with neon-green relish, tomato slices, dill-pickle spears and spicy “sport peppers” are go-to Wrigleyville fare, while the Italian sausage ($3.69) screams Windy City.
They also serve a killer cannoli, so save room for dessert, though with these artery-busting portions, you’ll be lucky if you make it that far. Italian Beefstro is open six days a week, until 6 p.m. on weekdays and 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The place isn’t much to look at, but the menu packs more wins than Soldier Field.
