Tacos around the clock

All right, downtown party people, you can stop making sacrifices to the munchies gods – your drunken prayers for a 24-hour downtown Mexican joint have been heard.

California Burrito Express has a vast menu of deals – most items struggle to break the $5 mark – but the signature California burrito ($4.99) stands out. Laden with seasoned carne asada and stuffed with crispy potatoes, bell peppers, onions and cheese, it’s the joint’s namesake for a delicious reason. When not working with beef, the kitchen’s seasoning can be hit or miss, as with the complimentary salsa bar (yay!), which needs more salt (aww) and the frustratingly dull rolled chicken tacos ($5.29 meal includes guacamole and a drink). But with keen pricing (like 69-cent sides of guacamole and sour cream), all-day breakfast and a selection of Latin drinks including the milky, cinnamon-sweet rice drink horchata, there’s enough reason for several return visits to seek out the menu’s hidden gems.
