Fall Guide 2010

Remember fun?

There was a time when it was a huge part of our lives. It used to make our adrenaline pump and our hearts race and our bodies feel alive. It often took place outdoors, and for some reason, it was always best when served with a mild to moderate dose of danger.

That seems to be particularly true of many of the activities beloved by Central Floridians. We play with alligators, swim with sharks (and amoebas), participate in sports worthy of X-Games status and nearly everyone we know seems to like to shoot at things.

For this year’s Fall Guide, our jaded editorial staff decided it was time to revisit fun and its comrade danger by partaking in a few fun fall activities that just wouldn’t be the same if they weren’t at least a little bit perilous. We found ourselves remembering what it felt like to defy death – or at least some serious abrasions and mild bacterial infections – and live to tell the tale.

In the following pages, we detail our action-packed exploits. We also take you on a guided tour of some tamer sorts of adventures to be had this fall – ones you can enjoy without risking life or limb: fall concerts, film festivals, Halloween frights, visual and performing arts exhibits, civic activities, sports and recreational opportunities and more. Get out there!
