Self-awareness fuels the sly but slight amateur comedy Film Geek, a 78-minute, halfway-there character study set in a world its audience probably knows all too well. Video-store clerk Scotty Pelk (Melik Malkasian) gets fired from his dream job for pelting customers and co-workers alike with unwanted trivia and critical opinions; set loose to find his way in the real world, he's unable to hold the simplest conversation that isn't in some way related to cinema. He keeps wearing his old nametag like a badge of honor and updating his low-tech web page with more movie reviews that nobody will ever see. (Or will they?) Detailed in its affectionate mockery, the film captures the social isolation that befalls guys like Scotty but understates their own complicity on it: By filling their heads entirely with received images, they're leaving no room to develop into human beings. With music by The Director's Friends in a Local Band.
