There’s a ridiculous idea out there that The Simpsons Movie has to equal the greatest moments of its TV parent, when it only needs to be as necessary to society as Munster Go Home. And boy, is it. The plot – in which Homer’s idiocy brings about environmental catastrophe – is as hilariously bombastic as the ones boob-tube producers used to spin off onto the big screen before they discovered the concept of the Very Special Episode; selling it is some of the funniest slapstick you’ve seen animated outside a Looney Tune. Not satisfied yet? Try moments of genuine poignancy, a climactic epiphany that transcends the concept of the “message movie” and an up-to-the-second satirical edge that eviscerates the sacred cows of lefties and righties alike. What’s that? You’re still not swayed? Oh, fine: Best. Evil Dead joke. Ever.
