Steve Aoki: Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles

Steve Aoki: Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles

Desc:CD REVIEW: ARTIST: Steve Aoki
Label:Dim Mak

After helming the tastemaking label for 11 years, the Dim Mak don has finally released his own debut mix album. With a DJ career that’s blowing up by the minute, Steve Aoki’s had a hand in the indie dance craze. He’s known for having a good ear, and his song selection is eclectic, ranging from Justice to Refused. Adding further diversity are guest vocal drops by Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat), Todd Fink (the Faint), Mickey Avalon and Pase Rock (Spank Rock), among others. These, along with all the rehashed styles used in the mostly remixed songs, lend the record a mash-up vibe. Despite lots of retread (such are the times we dance in), the party spirit is evergreen, and this high-energy set is designed to turn it out with bangin’ beats, fat synths and cheeky lyrics. Highlights include the Does It Offend You, Yeah?’s neo-disco (“We Are Rockstars”), Yelle’s spankin’ sass (“Je Veux Te Voir”) and the tweaked-out break on Soulwax’s excellent remix of Klaxon’s “Gravity’s Rainbow.”

Steve Aoki spins at Club Firestone 10 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2007.
