The knighting of nerds into hipsterdom has made stars of iconoclasts like MC Chris. But the dork culture’s next great white hope is more likely MC Chris’ current opening act, Indiana’s Totally Michael.
Arriving on the heels of his completely ridiculous but surprisingly good debut EP, For You, Totally Michael deals in a singularly giddy form of electronic pop that’s frozen in adolescence, with all the wide-eyed fervor and awkwardness that entails. The themes are decidedly juvenile but the formula works because of his underdog perspective, crisp sense of humor and knack for fetching hooks.
What endears Totally Michael to nerds, nerd-lovers and ironists is that confidence rides shotgun with his geekhood. Beyond pride, he wields his quirk like a lightsaber. It’s a tack that makes his boasts, which glorify things like the sex he likely didn’t have in real life (“In Her Diary”) an effervescent fount of both comedy and glory.
With impossibly infectious tracks like “Summertime,” “Prom Night” and “Cheerleaders vs. Drillteam,” the album is designed to incite bed-bouncing pillow fights and car-rocking dance jams. The obvious crown of the collection is the duet “Casual Satisfaction,” a collision of innocently jumpy dance-pop and lecherous lyrics that even 2 Live Crew would salute (“Damn girl, you make my dick erect /Ooh boy, you make my pussy wet”).
Breathlessly boppy and lightheartedly comedic, Totally Michael’s first full-length effort is a lark that encapsulates the euphoria of being young, excited and horny. More than that, it’s a solidly melodic record that’s catchier than the flu. It packs more charm than anyone has a right to expect from comedy music, and in the long run, Totally Michael is far less annoying than MC Chris.
