Recording >Review - Land of the Rising Sea: The Best of Japanese Ska
Ska is by its very nature a happy, fun sort of music. The English band Madness was the first to bring this to the fore with their "nutty sound." Now the third wave of ska has reached a new height with this Japanese ska compilation. This is the zaniest record to come out since Tiny Tim passed away.
Leave it to one of the most repressed first-world societies to come up with comic classics like "Lunch in the Jail" and "Here Your Pop Food," and band names like Snail Ramp and Duck Missile. Maybe Iíve just got a weakness for fractured English, but there are an awful lot of memorable ska bands on this disc, both the polished (the brilliant Madness-y Sideburns) and the enthusiastically amateur (the promising Young Punch). Pick it up!
